When Jessie came across the sea

Summary:

This book is set in the 19th century and tells the story of Jessie, a young girl, who leaves her beloved grandmother to travel to a better life in America.

Comment:

The narrative explores the strong bond between grandmother and granddaughter and presents both characters as strong, independent, and fearless, as well as exploring the bonds that sustain them and that connect Jessie’s deceased mother to their lives too. The power and importance of female relationships are emphasised in this story, despite its focus on the traditional love story between Jessie and Lou.
