Prestami le ali. Storia di Clara la rinoceronte

(Lend my your wings. The story of Clara the rhinoceros) Book not yet available in English

Venice, Carnival 1751. Clara, an Indian rhino, is shown in the biggest European cities as a freak show. You will meet a cat painter, a Jewish girl called Ester, and an African boy called Suleiman, who will help Clara to find her freedom.

Inspired by a true story, this is the first book for boys and girls written by Igiaba Scego, Italian writer of Somali origin. It can be considered as a hymn to freedom. Starting from Clara’s denied freedom, the author tells us a sad story of exploitation – including the colonial one – and hatred against others: what is done to Clara will also be done to human beings. Clara’s tragic imprisonment becomes a manifesto on the right of each individual to have a place to call home, where to return freely, with or without wings. The story of Clara is intertwined with the one of Ester, a Jewish girl who lives locked in the ghetto of Venice, and the one of Suleiman, a little slave of African origin. A plot which tell a contemporary story of racism, intolerance, and fear of the other. Together, Ester and Suleiman will free Clara, giving her the hope for happiness that she did not have in her real life. A fairy tale with a happy ending, simple and committed, which balances delicate and present issues with sensitivity, even though it is set in a context far away in time, made up of slavery, colonialism, and segregation. A history of cultural diversity for adults and children.
