Ella is a ladybug who has two wasp step-sisters who are very mean to her and treat her like their servant. One day, an artist Pierre throws a Grand Bug Ball, and things get very exciting for Ella when she is invited to the Ball.

This is a gentler adaption of the Cinderella story, retaining most of the narrative elements of the original tale. That the characters are bugs and spiders demonstrate an interest in widening of the appeal of the book. The fact that Ella loses her glasses, as opposed to a glass slipper, also refocuses the story.
