Summary:
This book is about a friendship between two boys who are very different. Sam is the class bully and Dave is quiet, imaginative, and seen as “different.” Sam and Dave eventually become friends, but only in secret. Sam’s reluctance to acknowledge that he knows Dave as a friend has some terrible results, which makes Sam come to an important realisation.

This book explores the difficulties of being different for pre-adolescent boys. The class bully Sam is completely changed by a friendship with a boy who is different from all the other boys: Dave is artistic, imaginative, and sees the world differently. Through their secret friendship, Sam undergoes great change but loses his friendship with Dave. Despite this loss, Sam has been changed for the better as a person.
