Summary:
This book is set in 1845 in Ireland, the time of the Great Famine. Life is difficult for Rosalind Hannigan, known as Slim, and her family, and as a result of the Famine and the political situation in Ireland, Rosalind and her family emigrate to America. The narrative follows Slim’s often difficult journey as she settles into new life in America.

Comment:
As well as featuring a strong female heroine as the main protagonist, the novel also touches on important issues of equality, as Slim asserts herself as capable and able as men when the family become involved with running a printing press.
