Tympeät tytöt – Aikuistumisriittejä
(Grumpy Girls – The Rituals of Growing Up) Book not yet available in English
Summary:
What is it like to be a girl and what does it feel like to grow up to be a woman? Riina Tanskanen’s graphic novel questions expectations and attitudes towards girls and women in a humorously straightforward and shameless way. The stories in the book discuss the restrictions placed on women and how they are showing in everyday life of women. It also explores the social structures hidden behind different expectations. Some of the strips or stories in the book have also been published on the art and social media account Tympeät tytöt (“Grumpy girls”), maintained by Tanskanen.

Comment:
This feminist graphic novel questions expectations and attitudes towards girls and women. Tanskanen consciously highlights issues that are considered inappropriate or taboo, such as female genitalia and menstruation. Although the comic is often humorous, it is built on a strong theoretical foundation, and the text includes quotes and references to, for example, government welfare statistics and feminist and philosophical classics. A list of texts that served as sources and inspiration is compiled at the end.
