The Lotterys Plus One is an important exploration of an atypical family not shaped by typical nuclear family structures and relationships. The sprawling and unusual family life is depicted as a kind of utopia, not bound by traditional relationships but instead by respect for each other, for learning, love, and the planet. Gender diversity is also explored in the book through the gender-fluid child Brian. Their interaction with their disapproving grandfather upsets their harmonious life but provides important exploration of conflict over difference.
