The breadwinner. A graphic novel

Parvana is an eleven-year-old girl who lives with her family in Kabul. One day, Parvana’s father is arrested for having forbidden books, and the family is left without someone who can earn money. As conditions for the family deteriorate, only one solution seems possible: forbidden to earn money as a girl, Parvana must transform herself into a boy, and become the breadwinner.

This beautiful graphic-novel adaptation of The breadwinner original book and animated film tells the story of Parvana who must disguise herself as a boy to support her family during the Taliban’s rule in Afghanistan, after her father gets arrested. The protagonist’s life stimulates a conversation on gender equality, and it is beautifully illustrated through a style which is simple but which shows the lights and shadows of Parvana’s experiences in each scene. Also, the Afghani setting is effectively depicted through details in the background, behind the development of the story.
