Summary:
Tim is an only child, but that is about to change. He’s getting an adopted sister called Nur, who comes from the other side of the globe and is the same age as him. The story explores the concept of sharing a room and one’s life with a new family member, with all the ups and downs it entails. The author describes in a simple and clear fashion how the life of an ordinary boy changes when a girl, who at first speaks a different language, has different habits and possesses a different set of skills, enters his life. The predominantly realistic yet poetic story tackles a contemporary topic involving children who are forced to leave their homeland for various reasons and are left to fend for themselves along the way. The charming story of a boy named Tim, who learns to accept his dark-skinned adopted sister, Nur, as she finds her place in a new, loving family, also touches on those who choose to “turn away.” For Nur, lemon ice cream is a new treat she eats slowly and carefully, just as she approaches all the other unfamiliar things around her — of which there are many in this new country. Through slice-of-life moments, we follow both children as they learn to navigate their shared world, forging a bond of allyship and friendship amid occasional misunderstandings, but above all, finding joy in discovering new words and phrases in both languages, new customs, clothes, food, and more. The bond between brother and sister deepens, enriching the life of the whole family. It’s not only Nur who benefits and grows through the experience, but Tim as well. And we, the (young) readers, benefit and grow with them, as this picture book highlights the importance of family, friendship, and intercultural understanding. With its thoughtful text and lively illustrations, this seemingly simple story offers countless opportunities for meaningful conversation at home, in kindergarten, or at school.
