In this story about the turbulent time of growing up and maturing, we meet Daša, a teenager who feels as if she does not fit in with her peers and finds it hard to find a kindred spirit. She dresses to her own taste, in punky black. She is a sensitive and thoughtful girl, who becomes a rebel full of rage due to a consumerist world and a school system full of injustice, competitiveness, exclusion and violence. An argument with a classmate even leads to a visit to the principal’s office. Daša has trouble accepting all the superficiality, stupidity, the parrot-fashion imitation, and hate speech directed by her classmates against anyone who is different. This is especially evident in her interactions with her classmates who have intolerant and violent attitudes towards people of other sexual orientations. She confronts them using a made-up profile on which she poses under the username Fat Lesbian. Daša searches for her true identity and validation and eventually finds both at a concert of her favourite band, to which her father, an ex-punk, takes her, and in music that critically points out that this world is a “sick machine” in need of fixing. The book has received the Večernica Award. It is targeted at the age range 14+, but it is also suitable for younger readers who are capable of critical independent reading.
