Rula busca su lugar

(Rula is loking for her role) Book not yet available in English

Rula wants to find her place in the world. According to her mother, her place is in her room, making her bed. Her grandmother says that Rula’s place is in the kitchen, preparing lunch. When Rula grows up, her family tells her that she must marry her cousin Farid, but Rula doesn’t want that, so she decides to clean the school to learn how to read and to go away in search of her freedom.

The book is a metaphor for the strength that knowledge provides as it empowers women to be free and believe in themselves. When Rula opens the book, she also opens the door to the universe of knowledge. Books are instruments that give her the freedom and the strength which are necessary to reject an arranged marriage. The book also makes children aware of women’s marginalisation in many cultures, where getting an education is a privilege for women (not a right, as it should be) and even a risk.
