The book presents some examples of historical persons who, given the way we typically understand the world, deviate from heteronormativity or heteronormative patterns based on heterosexual relationships. “Heteronormativity” means understanding heterosexuality as a social norm and therefore the only possible sexual orientation. It also means insisting that there is only one acceptable way to get married or have sex, which is to be between people of opposite genders. Consequently, heteronormativity presupposes coherence in terms of biological sex, sexuality, sexual identity, and gender roles. Pink Stories is not a historical account but rather a gallery of portraits revealing that which was supposed to stay hidden from a young reader. Indeed, it sets out by emphasizing two important facts. First, the world has been almost solely ruled by men, who have been using this power to influence the way history is written. Second, during the last two thousand years, most of the world has been controlled by monotheistic religions such as Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, which subdue and suppress everything out of the scope of heteronormativity. For this reason, it is of utmost importance to discover that which has been erased from history to be able to better understand the people and the world around us.
