Summary:

One year ago, Ahti was driving to the Jukola orienteering relay race when he ended up in a car accident which damaged his spinal cord. Now 19-year-old Ahti will never walk again so he has to use a wheelchair. The other teammates and friends who were also in the accident were not seriously injured, but Ahti has not been in contact with them for a while, not even with Marianna, whom Ahti was dating. Ahti can no longer do orienteering and it’s depressing him. It was more than a hobby for him, actually his whole life. Ahti ends up at a festival with his twin sister Alma, where he meets Kukka. They get to know each other and Kukka encourages Ahti to take up therapeutic riding and gym training.

Comment:

The novel tells the story of a young man’s life after a serious accident. Ahti is physically disabled and has to relearn things and give up his former hobbies and dreams. Sometimes Ahti feels like he has to be brave because of his parents, who are supportive but find the situation difficult. When he meets Kukka, Ahti finds a new kind of meaning and joy in his life, and dares to get back in contact with old friends. However, it is difficult to follow how others simply continue with their normal lives. With the help of those close to him, Ahti learns to understand that he too can have dreams just like anyone else.
