Summary:

The novel tells the story of Simon, a teenager hopelessly stuck in the labyrinths of virtual worlds. And of Eve, who enters his life purely by chance. He comes from an estranged and broken family. She comes from a caring and understanding background. It seems Simon has given up on reality, and meeting Eve might help him wake up from this numbness. But of course, nothing is as simple as it seems. (source: publisher)

Comment:

This young adult novel is the first example of Slovenian youth literature that uncompromisingly articulates one of the problems of modern youth that is increasingly present not only abroad but also in Slovenia: the so-called “hikikomori”. These are individuals, who take refuge in the virtual world of computer games, where life is easier and where they are successful, accepted and hidden away from the world and its problems. The author of the novel, Neli Kodrič Filipić, creates circumstances for a chance meeting of two characters with diametrically different personalities. A boy from a broken family who feels despair over life, the world, and his school. And a girl who comes from an entirely contrasting family background and an environment of completely different interpersonal relationships to those of the boy, although not everything is as ideal as it seems on the outside with her family either. The two find common ground in digital technology, where they are both trying to find solutions to their problems and seek validation for their success at any cost. Even by selling intimate photos to get recognition and as many likes as possible, as Eva does. This novel is a clash of two worlds that share the same goal of self-discovery, the longing for acceptance, and finally, the positive power of love, which, with the help of Eva and her energy, might ensure that Simon gets up and comes back to life. As suggested in the title of the novel, the only possible solution is to be honest in interpersonal relationships and to tell the truth, even though this may seem difficult. The book is targeted at the age range 14+, but it is also suitable for younger readers who are capable of critical independent reading.
