Nurse Clementine

Summary:

Clementine receives her dream birthday present when she gets a nurse’s outfit and nurse’s first aid kit. She immediately sets about looking after everyone, but her brother Tommy resists the nurse’s help, at least at first.

Comment:

The book explores Clementine’s desire to be a nurse and her delight in playing the role of nurse for anyone who will let her. However, the book does not stop at presenting Clementine’s ambition of being a nurse, which falls within a somewhat stereotypical career desire for young girls as presented in children’s books. Her brother refuses all the nurse’s help and attention, until he requires Clementine’s help when he is stuck in a tree, allowing Clementine to come to his rescue.
