This book, which evokes an old-time atmosphere, combines poetry with magic. The story of Lucetta, the ordinary daughter of an unconventional and free mother with supernatural powers, shows that even “normal” lives can hide something special and unique. The protagonists, all women, fight against the prejudices of their time and choose to lead an existence free from constraints. They put their gifts as healers to full use, gain joy and nourishment from caring for others, and depend on no one but themselves. Men are portrayed quite harshly as individuals to be feared and shunned. This book gives the message that women can aspire to a free and independent existence by relying on their own strength. The illustrations at the beginning of each chapter beautifully portray the magical atmosphere of this coming-of-age novel, from the restlessness of the protagonist’s youth to the peacefulness of adulthood.
