(The Curious Case of an Unusual Fly with Bad Karma) Book not yet available in English

Summary:

Karin is a smart and curious girl. She likes to watch films, she dances, and makes sure, among other things, that her father, with whom she lives alone, eats at least a minimum amount of healthy food. Her father is a private detective and spends all of his days observing his client’s fitness centre. When his client suffers a stroke in his own sauna one day, it appears that the event is no coincidence. As the web of intertwined threads and stories begins to unravel, Karin inadvertently gets entangled in them as well. (source: publisher)

Comment:

Putting aside the fact that it is an exciting crime story, this is a great novel in which the typical gender roles are reversed, which gives this young adult novel an even greater sense of excitement while it also creates space for plenty of humorous entanglements. These play out in the relationship between Karin, who is about to graduate from elementary school, and her father Sandi. Sandi, who is a bit all over the place after his divorce, is a single parent. He likes to crochet without a crochet hook, just using his fingers, and relieves all the stress by eating large amounts of junk food. After all, he’s very busy working as a private detective. He is solving a mysterious criminal case involving an unusual fly found in the sauna of his client, the owner of a popular fitness centre. In the end, the credit for finding the culprit and solving the attempted murder goes to his smart, brave and skilful young daughter, Karin, a real detective superhero. Her nonconformist grandmother Majda encourages Karin to be independent in her thinking and decision-making, as one of her principles is never to divide errands according to gender.
