Mon frère, ma princesse

(My brother, my princess) Book not yet available in English

Alyan is a five-year-old boy who would like to be a princess, wear a fairy dress, have long hair, and become a mum. His father sees nothing wrong, but his mother is worried. His big sister Nina tries to protect him from the cruel teasing of the children at school. How far will she go to defend him?

Transsexuality is rarely a theme in children’s literature. Catherine Zambon handles the thorny issue with short scenes and sober, poetic, powerful language. The play subtly blends the boy’s explorations and daydreams, the violent bullying, the powerlessness of the adults, and the bravery of the children. The theatre company “Les Veilleurs” has staged the sensitive, openly militant play that explores sexual identities without preaching or courting controversy.
