Summary:

An intense and original novel that tenderly intertwines complex themes such as gender identity, grief, friendship, and overcoming stereotypes. It does so with a fascinating and layered narrative structure, in which the linearity of the story alternates with poetic and theatrical incursions, resulting in an engaging and profound read. The protagonist is Danni, a cheerful and determined 12-year-old who lives in a small provincial town with his mechanic father after the loss of his mother, once a promising artistic gymnast in Romania. Danni dreams of practicing rhythmic gymnastics, a discipline he loves passionately, but in Italy is mainly practiced by girls. The novel thus opens with a fundamental tension: the desire to be himself and, at the same time, the difficulty of doing so in a society that imposes rigid roles and boundaries. Alongside him are Ambra and Radu, older friends, accomplices, and complicated characters. Ambra, a talented gymnast, becomes his secret coach, supporting him and helping him to express himself. Radu, also a second-generation Italian, a student and pianist, more rational and protective, perceives the risks of a game that openly challenges social norms. The bond between the three evolves in a credible and delicate way, becoming the emotional heart of the narrative. The fragile balance built by Danni is abruptly shattered when he suffers a homophobic attack. This event marks a turning point, forcing him to confront his fear, shame, and silence. The novel never takes a didactic or explicitly moralistic turn: it does not explore the protagonist’s sexual orientation, a lucid and respectful narrative choice that leaves room for the complexity of age and identity in formation. From a formal point of view, “Mille briciole di luce” stands out for its theatrical structure: the story is divided into five acts, each one introduced by a poem dedicated to a rhythmic gymnastics apparatus (the ball, the socks, the ribbon, the rope, the hoop). The narrative is counterpointed by the ‘chorus of gymnasts’, who intervene in verse to comment, guide, and sometimes admonish, just as in Greek tragedy. Among the secondary characters, there are some well-drawn and unexpectedly profound figures, such as Rosa, the hairdresser and friend of Danni’s mother, who represents an emotional and symbolic point of reference for Danni, and her father, a reserved man but capable of small revealing gestures. “Mille briciole di luce” is a story of resistance and possibility, which speaks to younger readers with honesty and beauty, offering them alternative models and tools for questioning themselves. But it is also an important read for adults, who can find in its pages insights to better understand the younger generations and support them in their search for freedom and authenticity. A novel reminiscent of Billy Elliot in terms of its theme, but one that finds its own original, poetic, and powerful voice.
