L’heure des parents

(Parents Time) Book not yet available in English

Camille dreams of a host of different parents and types of families. Camille’s parents are a wolf and a lioness, Louise and Big Nut. Camille’s parents are two lions, Nelson and Paul. Camille’s parents are two panthers, Alice and Maud. Camille’s parents are just a tigress, Juliette. Camille’s parents are Mum and Dad and they are part of all the parents Camille dreams of.

The book was first published by Être in 1999, the year France voted in civil partnerships. The picture book features traditional families, same-sex parents, single parents, adoptive families, and even a village raising a child in the case of beavers. The multiplicity of types of families are all presented on an equal footing with no value judgement. In the end, Camille’s parents are simply mum and dad. Interestingly, Camille’s unisex name and dungarees make it impossible to tell whether Camille is a boy or a girl. In the end, it’s just Camille, and Camille’s parents, and that’s all that matters.
