La venture d’Isée

(Isée's venture) Book not yet available in English

Summary:

Isée, the young heroine of Mile-Uvv, and her faithful cuddly toy Adoralove set out on a series of “ventures” of her own choosing: rather than giving in she stands her ground, rather than suffering she heals, and rather than being lonely, she goes out and meets people. [Source: Electre]

Comment:

Claude Ponti’s previous work left Isée finding her parents after a dangerous journey triggered by an accident that led her to a world that might be the realm of the dead, the living, or somewhere in between. What does Isée want to do now? As she tells her parents, this time she wants to go on an adventure that she has chosen. The text and images blend several levels of discourse, from explicit to subtle references, and from fantasy to symbolism. Isée constantly openly refers to the first and second volumes, indicating that the characters know what and where they are. Similarly clear is the author’s description of Isée’s adventure as a journey of initiation. There are also nods to other works, anchoring the title in a sort of literary reality. For instance, Isée meets the Little Prince, now called LilPrince, and the rose has a hard time of it. The fantasy stems from the plethora of astonishing characters and inventive use of language. Symbolism is found throughout the quest, which eventually leads Isée back home, but as she says, the path back is “a bit different.” La venture d’Isée (“Isée’s venture”) is an adventure for readers, constantly astonished, enthralled, destabilised, and subjugated by Claude Ponti’s creative energy.
