Comment:
The book, beautifully illustrated with silk paintings, takes a gentle, sensitive approach to the vital question of schooling, particularly for girls. The author recounts her own mother’s life, and the fact that it is a true story makes it all the more effective as a lesson in courage and perseverance, reminding young readers that even now, not all children have the opportunity of going to school.
