La fiesta de Blas

(Blas' party) Book not yet available in English

Summary:

Since we are born —and even before—, we are labelled according to what we have between our legs. This label is not only limited to the name we are given, but it also implies an imposition of femininity or masculinity. On one hand, you attempt to be like others and, on the other hand, your environment is telling you how you should behave according to the assigned gender. But what does it mean to “become a man” or to “become a woman”? Blas, the main character, wonders it when he turns 9 years old.

Comment:

This book deals with femininity, masculinity, sexual orientation, and identity by breaking stereotypes so as to help boys and girls to face these issues. Readers will sympathise with the main characters and will easily learn how to accept diversity.
