Summary:
On the first day of a new school year, Charlie meets Lola. She is immediately drawn to the new girl, who becomes her best friend. Charlie is disturbed by her attraction for Lola and begins to question her own identity. She is attracted to girls as well as boys. She is deeply hurt when Lola gets close to a boy, ecstatic when Lola touches her and spends time with her. Her parents keep bugging her about her sexual orientation, but Charlie hates the idea of labelling herself, reducing her identity to a simplistic, hollow word that cannot account for her complex feelings. Charlie discovers the disappointments and delights of love, and is building up the courage to tell Lola how she feels.

A short novel that paints a sensitive picture of nascent love and desire in a young woman who refuses to conform to rigid gender stereotypes or label herself with a single sexual orientation. The text is written as an interior monologue, giving the reader access to all Charlie’s thoughts, doubts, and moments of happiness. L.O.L.A. is a rewarding, enjoyable, hopeful read, because Charlie does not face brutal homophobia directly. She can count on the support and understanding of her loved ones.
