Kaksi tätiä nimeltä Veera

(Two Aunts Called Vera) Book not yet available in English

Summary:

Esteri and Viljami’s parents are tense about everyday chores and their lack of doing them. They decide to go on “a relationship care holiday” just the two of them and the children could go to Aunt Veera’s for the weekend. But which of the Veeras? Both parents have a twin sister named Veera and both have agreed on weekend care with their respective Veera. The children talk about them as Stripy-Veera and Polka-dot-Veera.

Comment:

The picturebook presents different families and living situations. Esteri and Viljami are twins, just like both of their parents are twins. The parents happen to have siblings with the same name: Veera and Veera. The aunts are very different, but besides the same name, they have one thing in common: they don’t have any children. Stripy-Veera lives with her partner Joska, whose gender is not specified in text or in illustration. They are very active and travel a lot, and they just don’t want to have children. Polka-dot-Veera lives alone with her cats in a colourful house. She has lots of neighbours, who she can spend time with and share yard tasks with. Veera wished to have children, but her wish didn’t come true.
