Summary:
This picture book tells the story of a little snail who has only just crawled into the world and does not yet have a name. As the story unfolds, the snail considers its choice of name through conversations with different animals it meets along the way, getting to know them and the stories behind their names. “Some of us are named after fruits or colours, others after saints, grandmothers, or famous artists,” says the Nut Weevil. But what kind of name should a little snail choose if it doesn’t fit neatly into either a girl or a boy role? It doesn’t feel like a girl snail or a boy snail, and longs for a name that would suit it equally well, whichever it may be. Through the motif of naming, the story gently addresses questions of gender, reflecting on how names are so often assigned only once a clearly defined gender has been determined. (source: publisher)
