Io sono così

(I'm like this) Book not yet available in English

The speaker loves playing with the ball, fighting with their brother, climbing the cliffs, and pretending to be a pirate. Surely, the storyteller doesn’t like to be called a “tomboy.” But who is hiding behind these actions? Turning the book upside down, we find out that the protagonist is someone who simply loves being themselves, without being classified in any ways.

The narrator of this concertina book tells us what they like and does not like to do in a sort of nursery rhyme that intertwines with the illustrations in black, red, and white, on an ochre background. The text merges with the illustrations working as a whole which can be seen in its entirety only after unfolding all the pages, like a wide-angle photo. However, the book discloses the real female identity of the storyteller only when we turn it upside down, with a sort of vertical self-portrait that goes from head to toe. The book is suitable for an unaccompanied reading, especially for its reading mode that encourages a progressive discovery. Settenove was created in 2013 and it is the first editorial project in Italy entirely dedicated to preventing discrimination and gender-based violence. It deals with these themes from different points of view and through all literary genres, with a focus on Italian and international fiction for children and young adults, which contributes to the development of a dimension free from stereotypes.
