Comment:

This is a picture book that deals with the theme of subverting stereotypes starting from two unexpected protagonists, a grandfather and a grandmother, and with a setting that allows readers to come in contact with nature and imagine in a vivid way its scents, flavours, and colours, thanks to Paolo Domeniconi’s soft and comforting illustrations. Unlike many other books for children in which grandparents are merely represented as caring figures for their grandchildren, here we find two people who have – at last! – a life of their own and enjoy it (for example, if in the evening there is a good movie on TV, they do not miss it because they have to wash the dishes, a task that can be postponed till the next morning). This book also has the great merit of reversing some gender stereotypes deeply rooted in children’s literature and beyond: against a long series of books depicting grandmothers who cook cookies and pies and grandfathers tinkering in the garage, in this case it is the grandfather who looks after the house and prepares the apple pie, while grandmother cheerfully goes to work with the tractor. This reversal is narrated with great naturalness, showing how such things can be familiar and normal. The book, published by the Giralangolo publishing house, is part of the series “Sottosopra” on gender identity and against stereotypes, directed by Irene Biemmi.
