Fille, Garçon

(Girl, Boy) Book not yet available in English

Summary:

A powerful and compassionate album that empowers children to play with gender identities by taking control of their representations. Hélène Duvert’s text is a militant cry for everyone to be free to choose and for everyone to have the right to doubt.

Comment:

In a minimalist and clever pop-up book, Hélène Druvert brings her leitmotif “you are free to choose” to life by inviting readers to literally grab masks, flaps, and other cutouts to dress up or reveal the identity of her characters, who are not exclusively determined by an assigned gender. The large format of the book and the playful and varied cardboard features lend themselves particularly well to interaction between children or within the family.
