(She) Book not yet available in English

A girl loves another girl. Every night she dreams of becoming a boy to be allowed to love her. But the other children at school point and laugh at her and she doesn’t understand why being in love means being teased. One day, she sends her friend a note, and her friend starts avoiding her. When the girl grows up she realises that adults don’t tell children everything about happiness and love.

Ania Lemin’s short picture book, with its delicate, poetic text and illustrations, features a girl in love with her friend, Elle. Through the child’s eyes, the book explores homosexuality, tolerance, and the burden of society’s expectations. With the innocence of youth, the girl is in love with her friend, and it seems so simple and easy. Why don’t “all the different ways of loving” lead to happiness?
