Destronada

(She is dethroned) Book not yet available in English

Summary:

Mackenzie is the queen of the school. She is beautiful, determined but she can also be cruel. Everyone wants to be like her. But she meets Hugo and falls in love with him. Hugo is older than her and he knows what is good for her, or at least this is what he thinks. Now Hugo is the one who decides for Mackenzie about who she can talk to, what she should wear, what her dreams should be. Mackenzie feels smaller and smaller but she obeys him because he loves her and she loves him.

Comment:

Violence and abusive behaviour are the main issues of this novel which has been awarded with the Jordi Sierra i Fabra Prize for young readers. Mackenzie tells her story in the first person. She details in a simple and clear way how the relationship she longed for ends up in a death trap. As a result, the text makes visible topics like homosexuality and bullying at adolescence. Young people will sympathise with the main character and will be able to face their own problems.
