Summary:
Charlotte has just arrived at her new boarding school and is trying to settle in to her new surroundings. However, after her very first night at boarding school, she finds herself in completely different time and place. Charlotte must find out what is happening and discover who she is in the process.

Comment:
The book explores the developing lives and subjectivities of two young girls in different time periods. The narrative explores questions of identity, as Charlotte questions what it is to be herself, and contemplates whether identity is built on those around you recognising you. The book also explores questions of courage and bravery in nuanced ways and there are many references to the problems and possibilities that face women and girls in the two time periods explored in the novel.
