Comment:
In comparison with the “Martine” series, often criticised for their portrayal of women and girls, the « Caroline » books were seen in the 1950s as modern and innovative. While Caroline can hardly be said to be revolutionary, she is a positive, active female character in a children’s book aimed at a wide audience. Wearing her red dungarees, she drives a car, does DIY, and solves mysteries. The series proved highly popular with several generations of French girls and boys.
