Summary:
Bor and his grandmother Milena decide to go to the mountains for a few days. Grandma is an experienced hiker, but a moment of inattention is enough for her grandson to tumble down a scree. The weather can change quickly when one goes to the mountains, but that is not the only thing that worries Bor. Last night he overheard mum and grandma having a terrible fight and now he finally understands why grandma never visits dad, even though he is her son. Is grandma really going to find her way back? This short problem novel addresses young readers by focusing on ten-year-old Bor’s recount of the relationships within his family. The boy feels oppressed by them since his grandmother renounces her homosexual son, which Bor, who would like to cohabit with his grandma, dad and his new partner, finds confusing. But even though it seems homosexuality features prominently in the novel, the author has taken care to restrict this topic to the conflicts between two adults. It is presented as one of the quarrels within the family which does not stand out in any way, but as one that inflicts the child with pain nonetheless. The novel is a well-written example of mountaineering fiction filled with suspense and characters coming face to face with themselves and the world. This experience leads to an upheaval in family relationships and to the grandmother overcoming her prejudice and resentment, thus being offered an opportunity for a new beginning. The book is illustrated, which complements the plot effectively. The book has been selected for White Ravens, an annual selection of children’s and youth literature from around the world by the International Youth Library in Munich. It has also received the Golden Pear Mark of Quality.
