Summary:

Maddalena is a loser. Or at least that’s how she and her friend Giorgio are perceived by Zago and the other terrible girls of her gang, who impose the law of violence in the aisles of Pitagora High School. But things can change with a low mark at school and an afternoon Latin course with Alessandro, the most beautiful boy of the class. Because Alessandro has a brain and Maddalena isn’t the loser she may seem…

Comment:

A graphic novel that tackles the theme of bullying and the fear that paralyses its victims and prevents them from reacting, by showing through words and illustrations how such fear and the desire to escape can be turned into a resource. A story of bullying but also of female courage, in which the brevity and immediacy of the graphic novel are accompanied by a complex text, which is also refined in some passages, and which explores the inner world of the characters. In an authentic and lyric way, the author outlines the world of Maddalena and teenagers, showing its dark side and negative feelings (fear, mistrust, insecurity, violence, ignorance, sense of inadequacy), but also the positive energy that comes from beautiful, vital, and simple feelings such as friendship, love, courage, and the ability not to give up. A story of boys and girls, in which also adults find their own well-defined space. In fact, Maddalena’s challenge (do not run away in front of the bullies, fight for your own ideas and happiness) is also the challenge of Professor Rigilli, who is ready to resign from school because he has lost confidence in it. The book also contains an interesting reflection on love relationships between adolescents. For the bullies even these relationships can be conquered through violence. Zago thinks Alessandro belongs to her: she considers him as her man, her boyfriend, and she thinks she doesn’t need a real and reciprocal feeling. This relational model is opposed to the relationship that Maddalena and Alessandro will build, with a beautiful message of affective education. The book is part of the series “Leggimi! Graphic” (Read me! Graphic) by Sinnos, which uses highly readable expedients to facilitate the reading also of comics and graphic novel.
