Summary:

A warm May night in 1993. The siege of Sarajevo began a year ago and there is no end in sight, just like the fratricidal war between the once allied Yugoslav nations. A couple of young Serbs stand in their kitchen, lost in silence. Davor, a Christian, and Aida, a Muslim, have preserved their love amidst the destruction and madness that reign in the besieged city. They know that another short, barely half-hour lull is approaching, when the snipers rest. Staring at the hands of the clock, they have made the decision to escape – to reach freedom… or to meet death.
Twenty years later, a Bulgarian travels to Sarajevo to meet the Serbian translator of his book. Soon they find themselves in a pub and imperceptibly start talking about the war. As the hours pass, the empty bottles on the table increase, and long-buried secrets come to the surface.
Two nights. Four destinies. All leading to the most important questions.

Because “I’m Still Counting the Days” is a true and brutal story about war, but not just any war, but the one close to us, which happened only twenty years ago, which for some unknown reason no one talks about and almost no one knows about…
Interviews with survivors of the war are inserted between the individual fragments, but far changed. These interviews, although occupying a small part of the story, actually showed best what it is to participate in such a war, regardless of which side you are on. They showed the thoughts of the people, the sacrifices they made and their experiences. They also showed the attitude of men towards women, how they almost consider them far inferior and “have no problem” satisfying their desires with them, because otherwise what are women for? It is easy to forget that this war was so recent, it is easy to forget that everything described by Bardarov can happen now, is happening now… We are used to thinking that wars only happened years ago, we are used to forgetting them…But we mustn’t.
