Lonely Miss Cecilia’s days are pretty much the same until one day she loses her job as a social worker. When she leaves her workplace, she takes only her notebook and a luxuriant monstera plant with her. On the way home, she bumps into Vanja, the child of a street musician, and they soon become friends. The day Cecilija misses her regular bus to work, disrupting her strict routine, everything changes. After being fired from her job as a social worker, she packs up her monstera plant, takes along her little notebook where she records special cases, and heads home. Since she can’t bring the plant on the bus, she walks instead, another small detour that sets off a chain of unexpected changes. That’s when Vanja enters her life, living a chaotic existence with her father, a street musician. Gradually, the two begin to change each other in subtle ways. “To Cecilija, it seemed that Vanja brought life into her room, like a flat pebble sending soft ripples across the water, stirring her from the depths.” For Vanja, in turn, Cecilija’s gentle quietness offers a safe haven, “an invisible nook where she could be at peace. And rest.” Together, they create a community of their own, bound by the notebook of peculiar, unresolved cases. In an unexpected twist, these cases become special in an entirely different sense: they end up saving Cecilija. Brimming with scrumptious cakes, endless cups of tea, new friendships, and mended objects rather than discarded ones, the novel, ending on a hopeful “and they lived happily ever after,” is as soothing as a cup of Cecilija’s jasmine tea.
