“La gita selvatica” is the story of a young girl who discovers confidence in herself and others through rock climbing. She is inspired by the experiences of the Stone Masters and, in particular, by climber Lynn Hill, a pioneer of the sport in the 1980s. Reading about their achievements, Nina learns that climbing is not just a sport, but a way of life that brings with it a vision of the world and human relationships. During her first outing on the cliff, the protagonist finds herself challenging her fear of the rock, gender stereotypes, and her own sense of inadequacy. Supported by her climbing companions and instructor Nico, Nina realizes that in the mountains she can feel strong, courageous, and free, just like her heroine Lynn Hill. “La gita selvatica” is a story of challenge and discovery, delightfully illustrated by the author, who uses shades of green and red to evoke the strength and beauty of the outdoors. There are also some simple and accessible explanations of the technical aspects of climbing, which may encourage young readers to take up this wonderful sport.
