The Lonely Book is significant in its approach to exploring non-binary identities. In the bookshop that Annie and her sister Charlie’s mother runs, every book finds its reader apart from one: the “lonely book” of the novel’s title. The book is about being non-binary and stops being lonely once it finds its owner: Annie’s sister Charlotte. The book facilitates Charlotte’s understanding of gender identity, and they ask their family to use the pronouns they/them and to call them Charlie.
