Io, bullo

(Me, the bully) Book not yet available in English

Summary:

Alessandro is a thirteen-year-old boy who lives in one of Palermo’s most difficult suburbs. The arrest of his father, charged with murder, and the symbolic passing on of the role of head of the family to him deeply affect him. Always ready to pick a fight, he considers himself the boss in class and does not respect the rules. Supported by his lifelong friends, he insults his classmates, especially the weaker ones, and takes possession of other people’s things and destroys them just for fun. He has a brash attitude and hardly anyone dares to contradict him. One day, however, he puts a classmate’s life at risk. And everything changes. [Publisher’s website]

Comment:

Bullying at school among (pre)adolescents, is – unfortunately – a very common and often underestimated problem. However, the author of the book, Giusi Parisi, through the point of view of the bully shows a different reality: at the basis of the bullying and violent attitudes, there is not only a problematic family background, but also a great social pressure of the strong and apparently respectable man, given by toxic masculinity. The story tells of a journey of inner growth and open-mindedness, from the insecurity and sense of inadequacy typical of that age, to self-acceptance for what one is and not for what one wants to show off. At the same time, the author deals sensitively with diversity and inclusion as well as gender equality, overcoming stereotypes. She then focuses on the shared responsibility for the bully’s intimidating and abusive behaviour, including by those who witness but remain silent, thus becoming his accomplices. The book is effective and understandable for a young audience, given the clarity with which the topic of violence against children and women is addressed. In addition to self-control of emotions, it promotes awareness not only of the consequences of one’s actions, but also of the weight of words. An alternative reading that finally proposes good practices to defeat bullying, emphasising the value of friendship and mutual respect.
