This multidisciplinary book ranges from the DNA found in the mitochondrion (transmissible only by the mother) to the palaeontological findings of the Rift Valley, from ancient Egyptian queens to the difficult conditions of African women. It includes a selection of extraordinary women who changed their future thanks to the possibility of studying, such as Wangari Maathai, Nobel Peace Prize winner, or Nahid Toubia, the first Sudanese woman to become a surgeon. The book is fluently readable, a small example of good non-fiction for a young audience. Some may find it difficult to read, but the very short chapters, the simple illustrations, and the small glossary at the end help to make the text more enjoyable. From genetics to ancient history, from archaeology to today’s social problems, the book offers young readers many insights, recognising Africa’s role as the cradle of humanity, its importance for the future of the planet, and the incredible potential of the women of this continent. The text is genuinely committed to the advancement of women, as is the Rita Levi-Montalcini Foundation, which considers the fact that the majority of African girls cannot study to be a serious problem, and therefore offers scholarships in the most disadvantaged areas of the continent. It is therefore a pity that at times the book lacks inclusive language: when speaking of evolution, the term “man” is often used, in addition to the use of the male forms when talking about women. Nevertheless, the book is strongly recommendable as an enriching reading for girls and boys in secondary school (and beyond).
