Comment:
Keith Negley’s Tough Guys (Have Feelings Too), a simple, stylishly illustrated picture book, suggests that showing emotions is still hard for boys. This charming book makes the well-timed choice to deal with male emotions, showing the different male models while they perform traditional macho roles. The message is that it’s ok to show emotions, “just like these tough guys, who love each other very much.” The book’s ending shows an image of a boy and his dad reading together in bed. The last page shows the boy dressed up as each of the “tough guy” images from the book’s pages playing with his dad.
