Summary:
Parvana is a young girl in Afghanistan whose life becomes more and more restricted when the Taliban come into power. When her father is put in prison by the Taliban, Parvana must pretend to be a boy in order to help her family. The novel follows Parvana’s adventures.

Comment:
As Parvana must dress as a boy in order to help her family, the text draws attention to masculinity throughout, and the different ways masculinity is depicted in the novel’s various characters. Parvana’s disguise as a boy also draws attention to the idea of gender as a performance.
