Summary:
Dr. Jean Baudoin and Dr. Vianney Chasseloup share a GP surgery. Dr. Baudoin is embittered, careless in his prescriptions, and cannot stand consultations lasting more than ten minutes. Dr. Chasseloup, who is younger and more patient, takes on the hopeless cases his colleague refuses to see. One day, Dr. Baudoin’s daughter, Violaine, falls pregnant and does not want her father to know. She turns to Dr. Chasseloup, who guides her through the difficult process ahead.

A magnificent novel that takes a very sensitive approach to the thorny issue of abortion. Marie-Aude Murail scrupulously documents the various steps needed for a termination. The steps Violaine has to go through are not fun, but she makes it with the support of her friend Adélaïde and Annie from the family planning clinic. Violaine learns that one in every two women has a termination at some point, even her own mother. Gradually, the psychological violence inflicted on Vianney Chasseloup as a child becomes clear. His budding love for Violaine adds a lighter touch to a beautiful novel on a painful theme. On the topic of abortion, more mature readers may also benefit from Jo Witek’s Trop tôt (2015, éditions Talents Hauts).
