Summary:

A series of short statements which recount everything the protagonist does to get the girls to notice him. The action takes place alongside a sandpit, where the protagonist shows off to catch the girls’ eyes just once, bringing over his toys, his spade, going down the slide on his tummy or with his eyes closed, and jumping very high. Nothing works, until he starts crying – then the girls gather round and look at him. But his joy is short-lived… [Source: Ricochet]

Comment:

The simple, comic-strip style drawings, in shades of yellow and orange against large white backgrounds, focus on the characters and their expressions. The book uses the simplest of means to paint a picture of life in the sandpit that young children will find familiar. [Source: Ricochet]
