Citizenship is a status that links an individual to a political community — their state. For some time now, it has seemed that most citizens, especially the younger crowd, have been losing interest in politics; however, active citizenship is making a comeback through environmental activism and a renewed awareness of violence, discrimination, and hate. New dilemmas are coming into focus as well: questions about freedom of expression and tolerance and where their limits lie; about patriotism versus nationalism; about multiculturalism, inequality, and violent extremism. Young People’s Citizenship Glossary is essentially a hitchhiker’s guide to the questions and ideas that have shaped the world we live in today, and to their historical context. It explores many of the “classic” issues that arise when we talk about active citizenship, democracy, free speech, tolerance, discrimination and equal opportunity, patriotism, multiculturalism, and more. Along the way, it draws on examples from the distant past (such as ancient Greece and Rome), from more recent history (for instance, the Cold War period after World War II), and from everyday life.
