Belle di faccia
(Pretty faces) Book not yet available in English
Summary:
Do you think that body positivity is just a matter of “obsessing” over your physical appearance, that it’s simply about wounded self-esteem, that it’s a trivial matter? Do you believe that a fat person who accepts themselves and claims their space in the world is dangerous? In “Belle di faccia: tecniche per ribellarsi a un mondo grassofobico” (Beautiful on the Outside: Techniques for Rebelling Against a Fatphobic World), you will discover why the liberation of fat bodies is, in fact, a feminist issue that has little to do with self-love and much to do with social justice and the creation of a more inclusive society.

Comment:
More than an essay, Belle di faccia is a manifesto against fatphobia, based on solid arguments and far from the simplifications of commercial body positivity. The authors clearly show how society—more than fat itself—can negatively affect mental and physical health if it fails to educate people about body diversity. It is a book that should be brought into schools because it is full of urgent and transformative messages. It is an invitation to look at ourselves and other people less judgmentally. This book denounces the hypocrisy of a system that talks about inclusivity while continuing to celebrate a single ‘acceptable’ and reassuring body type: that of the white, straight, cisgender, thin or slightly curvy woman. It is a text that forces readers to admit their own hypocrisy when it comes to accepting fat bodies.
