Summary:
Chibok, Nigeria, April 14, 2014. More than 200 girls are resting in their school dormitory, waiting for their end-of-year exams. In the middle of the night, Boko Haram militants break in and kidnap them, dragging them into the Sambisa Forest. Like them, hundreds have been sucked into the black hole of history. They are the “stolen girls.” Apart from their families, almost no one knows who they are. To the world, they are faceless numbers. Yet they all have lives, parents, siblings, friends, and plans. Rebecca, Dorcas, Monica, Hajara, Rifkatu, Ruth, Hauwa: these are seven of the stolen girls, just seven of the hundreds of lives shattered in Nigeria that April.

Through intense and profound interviews with the victims’ families, the authors of this book give voice and dignity back to seven of the many girls kidnapped by Boko Haram in April 2014: Rebecca, Dorcas, Monica, Hajara, Rifkatu, Ruth, and Hauwa. Their true and touching stories are intertwined with Rachel’s one, an imaginary but incredibly realistic character who embodies the pain and resilience of all the “stolen girls.” These pages are filled with suffering, anger, and courage, reminding us that not all stories have a happy ending and that this is just another reason why they deserve to be told. Some girls have returned, scarred forever, while many others are still missing. This book is an act of remembrance and denunciation, an invitation not to stop searching for the truth and not to look away.
