Dazwischen: Ich

(In Between: Me) Book not yet available in English

Summary:

The fate of 15-year-old Madina is shared by many […] [children with a history of displacement]: they are all […] bridge builders between their families and their new lives in the Western world. After a difficult escape from the war in her homeland, Madina has finally arrived in a country that promises safety. But not everyone in her family is finding it easy to settle in. And so it is up to Madina to mediate between her family in the refugee shelter and the unknown life outside. She takes her family’s fate into her own hands and finds a friend in Laura, who represents home for her in a foreign land. A moving story about friendship, migration, and growing up in times of war and persecution – told with authenticity.

Comment:

“Julya Rabinowich writes an unabashed and powerful story of escape and arrival – and a book against war…Rabinowich also impresses with her characters, whom she portrays as complex and ambivalent, just as life shapes people … Rarely does one encounter such a strong narrative counterpart on the very first pages, such a unique voice that demands to be heard.” Katrin Hörnlein, Die Zeit, 8 December 2016
