Die Sonne, so strahlend und schwarz

(The Sun, So Radiant and Black) Book not yet available in English

Summary:

The adolescence of the young Nova is marked by “multiplicity,” as she herself calls it. She has just escaped the violent reach of her stepfather, together with her younger brother Cosmo and her mother, and now finds herself not only in an empty apartment, but also on a journey to discover her self-image. The verse novel traces her steps in her newfound everyday life. Slowly, she overcomes the emotional and physical wounds of the past. She finds help in her friends, both old and new, as well as through her passion for roller skating and dancing, and her first love for Akoua, who is the same age.

Comment:

Chantal-Fleur Sandjon uses vivid, condensed verse and fresh metaphors to tell the story of a complex identity. […]Growing up as a Black, queer young woman in Germany is explored in all its diversity and complexity. Sandjon consistently links individual fate with the societal level, referring to current issues such as police violence and historical events such as the immigration of African workers to the GDR.
